The Shining analysis - part 12: Resolution of the planet and god/goddess symbolism

At left is shown Jack Torrance having just killed Dick Hallorann with an ax. Jack represents the planet Mars and thus the Roman god Mars, whose Greek 'equivalent' was Ares, god of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle. He represented the distasteful aspects of brutal warfare and slaughter.[a] (Recall that within the context of Dick Hallorann's death, it is Wendy herself who is responsible for this, insofar as Hallorann represents the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Jack is here the personification of Wendy's own murderous impulse).

Recall that Danny represents Sol, and therefore the sun, and that Wendy represents Luna, and thus, the moon. We need to determine which characters in the movie represent the other five classical planets (Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn); this will tell us which gods/goddesses these characters represent. As noted next to the above screencap, Jack represents Mars. Since Jack is a writer, he also represents Saturn, who was said by Paracelsus to stand outside of life and observe it;[b] this is effectively what a writer does.

Wendy Torrance represents Venus, the goddess of sexual desire.

Recalling that Danny uses his index finger to represent Tony, then in accordance with the index finger symbolism described in part 10 of the analysis, Danny represents the planet, and thus the god, Jupiter. Also, since Danny represents Sol, he represents the masculine and active half of Mercurius. He is thus associated with the god (and planet) Mercury.

Note that the criss-cross patterns on the wall tapestry near Jack, form seven diamond-shaped patterns - a row of 3 in the middle, with 2 each on top and bottom. Regarding the number seven, it is of interest to look at something Daniel Merkur says in his book on Gnosis:[c] "In the Sethian Gospel of the Egyptians, the Father, the Mother, and the Son formed a trinity of powers in the Ogdoad...a sentence that has only been partially preserved speaks of "the number of seven", presumably in reference to the heavenly powers below the Ogdoad." The Ogdoad, in Egyptian mythology, was a 'system' consisting of eight deities arranged in four male-female pairs. There will be more on the Ogdoad later in the analysis; the important thing for the reader to keep in mind here, is the aforementioned trinity of powers in the Ogdoad.
