The Shining analysis - part 8: Death of the Holy Spirit

Above left and right: As Danny experiences his 'vision' of the events taking place between his father and the woman in the room 237 bathroom (above left), he goes into a trance, and holds his breath or gags (above right). Left: Simultaneously, in Florida, Dick Hallorann senses that something is wrong at the hotel, as if Danny is sending him a telepathic 'message'.

Above left: After being unable to reach anyone at the Overlook, Hallorann flies to Denver. Here a stewardess tells him that it will be 2:20 p.m. when the plane reaches its destination. It is currently 2 p.m., so this means the plane will land in 20 minutes. Note the eerie bright white light in the airplane windows. Above right: After Hallorann speaks with the stewardess, we are shown Jack typing at his desk in the hotel for about 20 seconds. Left: The next thing we see is Hallorann's plane landing. This 'compressed' time period of 20 minutes into less than half a minute, indicates that Hallorann experiences a kind of 'timeless' movement. What this actually represents is movement of the Holy Spirit, for recall that Dick Hallorann represents (a 'corrupted') Holy Spirit.

For the large majority of Christians, the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost, from Old English gast, "spirit") is the third divine person of the Holy Trinity: the "Triune God" manifested as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; each person itself being God.[a] In the bible's Gospel of John, chapter 20, verses 20-23, a correspondence is drawn between breath, and the Holy Spirit: 20. [T]hen the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." 22. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." 23. "If you received the sins of any, they are forgiven them..." [New Revised Standard Version; emphasis not in original.]

This link between breath and the Holy Spirit informs us on the connection between Wendy's choking of Danny, and the death of Dick Hallorann: When Wendy chokes Danny, she has killed the Holy Spirit within him; but, since Hallorann represents the Holy Spirit, it is therefore Wendy, not Jack, who is responsible for Hallorann's death (insofar as he represents the Holy Spirit).
